Infertility
Conception can be a difficult and stressful process, infertility as a couple is generally defined as a failure to conceive after 1-year of regular intercourse without contraception. Male factor infertility (MFI) is Mr Gordons main area of subspecialisation, as the lead for this service in Yorkshire. Men suffering with MFI can have a wide range of hormonal, genetic, urological and general health issues. MFI can be a contributing factor in up to 50% of couples experiencing infertility. Mr Gordon specialises in treating men, both surgically and medically, that suffer from conditions such as azoospermia, oligospermia, ejaculatory disorders and varicocele, which can all lead to reduced quality of sperm.
Azoospermia
Azoospermia is when there is no sperm at all in the ejaculate. It can be caused by two things; an obstruction that is stopping the sperm from entering the ejaculate (such as previous surgery or infection causing scarring of the Vas Deferens) or because there is an issue with sperm production (non-obstructive).
Oligozoospermia
Oligozoospermia (low or poor quality sperm) is where a man has fewer than 15 million sperm per millilitre of semen. Having a low sperm count can make it more difficult to conceive naturally, although not impossible naturally. Problems with sperm, including a low sperm count and problems with sperm quality, are quite common
I would always recommend that couples get investigated together to identify any issues (may be multiple) and would generally take referrals for this after having been worked up in one of our IVF units, as initial investigations can be time consuming and costly. The sooner the diagnosis is made (if not done already Mr Gordon can help) the faster the correct management pathway can be initiated. I work closely with my team of IVF fertility experts at CARE fertility Leeds in both my private and NHS practice.
Mr Gordon is a leading UK expert in MFI, sitting on the male fertility panel of the British Fertility society (BFS) and is involved in multiple research trials in this poorly understood and under researched field.
For MFI we offer:
-
Full clinical assessment (genetic and hormonal blood tests, ultrasounds if required, semen analysis and storage)
-
Surgical sperm retrieval (from needle aspiration to microscopic surgery)
-
Microscopic vasectomy reversal and reconstruction (epididymovasostomy)
-
Microscopic varicocele ligation
