Circumcision

Mr Gordon’s NHS practice receives referrals from across the country for reconstructive surgery to resolve functional issues following poorly done circumcisions. Each week he performs complex skin graft reconstruction, penile cancer and penis un-burying procedures related to this.

Most men require the procedure due to tight foreskin (phimosis) which can be present at birth or develop later in life. Other issues can include recurrent infections (Balanitis) or a tight frenulum.

Circumcision is done as a day case procure. It can be done under either a general or local anaesthetic depending on patient preference. The procedure will take around an hour. The sutures used appear white and slowly dissolve over 4-6 weeks.

After the procedure patients should keep the wound dry for 24-48hrs. After this they can shower once a day, allowing soapy water to run across the wound. Applying Vaseline can stop the wound sticking to clothing. Baths should be avoided for the first 4 weeks as they will lead to early breakdown of the sutures. Numbness or tingling along the suture line is normal. Scabs should be left along as they will fall alone naturally.  Patients are reviewed at 6 weeks in clinic, after which they can resume sexual activity.
